The Problem with New Aged Hairstylists

Writer: Karla BoydKarla Boyd

I am so tired of the new generation of “master” braiders. Gone are the days of going to the hairstylists with your hair in its natural state and the stylist could do it, no questions asked. Where you were not getting charged for everything under the sun, such as being 10 minutes late and not having your hair bone straight.

Now, people see one tutorial on Youtube and think that they can braid and charge people ungodly amounts of money. It is ridiculous the number of times I have seen people, whether on Twitter or Instagram, having to expose these “braiders” for their bad business practices, horrible attitude, or underwhelming braids. If someone wants to be a braider, they should be exactly that. If you claim to know how to do natural hair, you should be able to do it in all forms and all textures, not just type 3b hair and type 4 hair with a blowout.

Why are you telling someone that you can do natural hair and have exceptions? A protective style should be what it is, a protective style. Just admit you cannot do natural hair and go! Another thing that is crazy is the fact that the prices of braids have risen exponentially. Sometimes, medium-sized butt-length box braids can sometimes be $300. What is the reason? The same braids were $100 two years ago? Am I missing something?

In this screenshot from a braider, she addresses criticisms she receives from not detangling hair, which is the first step in braiding hair. Instead of changing her policy, she gives her reasoning for not detangling hair, saying that is “time-consuming" and it strains her hands. It is not possible to braid hair that is not detangled and if someone is paying you for a service, they are paying you to do ALL of it. If someone is serious about mastering a skill, they should take pride in their work and do it thoroughly. Honestly, what happened to braiders? Can someone explain where they went because I am tired of doing my own hair.
