Shampoo or No Shampoo?

Writer: Karla BoydKarla Boyd

We have all seen the clickbait titles on Youtube. “Why I stopped using shampoo,” and “No more shampoos.” Some natural hair Youtubers have deemed shampoos the natural hair community’s worst enemy. They also say that sulfates, parabens, and whatever random chemical compound or random ingredient is detrimental to our hair. They also say that it strips our hair of its natural oils and makes it brittle so it won’t grow.

Personally, I have always used shampoos with sulfates, and they do a great job of cleansing my hair. So, when I heard of this, I was shocked and I found the most Youtuber-recommended sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, Ogx, and started to use it. After using it for about three months, I noticed some differences. When I use my favorite sulfate shampoo (Aussie, 10/10 would recommend), my hair is clean and all of the products that I used in my hair are gone. When I would use Ogx, I felt as if some of the products were still there and I had to scrub my hair more. I am in no way bashing Ogx, I still use it from time to time, but Aussie will forever have my heart (and it’s cheaper).

I love my sulfate shampoo and I will continue to use it. I honestly do not care what people may say, whatever new study may come out, or whatever new Youtuber denounces it. Aussie is here to stay. The shampoo debate aside, I wonder where the natural hair gurus (yes, the Youtubers with more than 100k subscribers) get their information from. It seems as if one day someone says something and then everyone goes along with it. This is one thing that I can’t get behind. If your hair loves sulfate-free shampoos, more power to you! I am going to stay with ol’ reliable Aussie.
