Hair Products For us, By us

In the spirit of Black History Month, our blogging team has curated a short directory on Black-Owned Hair Products that we personally recommend and hope our readers might find resourceful. In an industry where exploitation and deceitfulness dominate, we encourage finding trustworthy companies with our best interests in mind. Who more likely to share our best interests than owners that use the same products and experience the same hair struggles. Consider supporting Black businesses and showing your hair some love in the process.
Our Recommendations:
Eden Bodyworks

As a product junkie, I’m constantly on the search for the perfect moisturizer for my hair. I came across Eden Bodyworks, specifically the hibiscus honey line, through Youtube. My first impression of the hydration custard was that it smelled amazing (my friends can confirm). It was also lightweight but still super moisturizing. However, I recommend that you avoid applying too much product because it may flake a little bit. What I loved most about the custard was that it left my hair voluminous. The bigger the better am I right? If you’re not a fan of that, I also found their almond marshmallow hydration serum to add more definition and reduce the volume. If you’re still on the fence about trying Eden Bodyworks, all of their products are very affordable, so I believe it’s worth a shot. - (Karan Smith, Blogging)

Mielle Organics

I ordered a couple of items from their collection/brand during Black Friday and absolutely fell in love with this leave-in conditioners. Like when I tell you it got me to cheat on my ole reliable Shea Moisture JBCO leave in, know that it’s serious. It smells great, provides enough slip for detangling/styling and did I mention it smells great? The only downside is the pump, it has a mind of its own. Overall would definitely recommend, just don't tell JBCO. - (Arneris Rojas, Blogging)

Taliah Waajid

I started to use this leave-in when my cousin told me about it. It’s under $10, is very light-weight, and has a minimal odor. The product is so light-weight that I have to put a lot so it feels like there is something in my hair, but it keeps my hair moisturized. Overall, you should get this product if you want something that's cheap and does the job (It’s at BJ’s!). But, if you want your hair smelling like tropical fruit, this is not for you. -(Karla Boyd, Blogging)

Camille Rose Natural

I only started using this Camille Rose’s moisture milk a month ago but I’ve never fallen in love with a product as fast as I did with this one. I have a tumultuous relationship with leave-ins and milky products- they’re runny, thin and because they provide so much slip there’s never enough hold on my curls. This one though… It's lightweight and at the same time very firm, and it’s thick enough to actually provide a nice hold on my hair without making it greasy or crunchy. And to top it off the smell is delicious, I swear it smells like the caramel sauce on flan and I don’t see myself using any other moisture milk anytime soon :). - (Anya Carbonell, Blogging)

Curl Theory

This recently released product from Curl Theory is the perfect addition to any moisture collection. The process for properly moisturizing curls can be confusing. You need to have moisture (water) in your hair, but not too much, also not wash under hot water, use a leave-in but also more products to seal moisture?? It’s a lot, but just a few drops of this daily oil treatment makes it feel a whole lot simpler. With only a sparing amount, this oil helps lock in moisture, and helps reveal shiny, defined curls - not to mention it smells amazing. Also, it was comforting to see the ingredients are all-natural, unlike some companies that have been in some hot water recently (DevaWho?) but no shade in this post. - (Moriah Mikhail, Blogging)

Uncle Funky's Daughter

Before going into detail, I have to say that Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic Curl Stimulator is probably one of the best gels I’ve ever used. Honestly, I’ve never liked gels, but a moisturizing styler can never provide enough definition for my 3C/4A hair texture. I was attracted to the product due to its rave reviews. Initially, I found its consistency to be really odd. It was similar to Kinky Curly’s Curling Custard, but more snot like (if you’ve ever tried it, you know how accurate that statement is). Nevertheless, the consistency wasn’t an issue and the smell was pleasant. The definition this product gave my curls was phenomenal! The plus is if you apply it to soaking wet hair as recommended, you don’t need much product to get well defined curls. This is the gel I am currently using and I plan on repurchasing once it runs out. - (Karan Smith, Blogging)
